It\'s located at 441 Grand River Ave at Bagley, very close to the Gaelic League. Patrick Cleary mentioned it a few times when he was here, thinking it might be good for us on the Monday night when the GL holds its general meeting. Anyway, if you\'re free and want to join us, we\'ll be there 8:15/8:30 ish.

An Evening of Traditional Irish Music and Dance Gaelic League Sat, May 7

Featuring

Randal Bays (Irish Fiddle and Fingerstyle Guitar) with Davey Mathias (Guitar)

First time visitors to the Detroit area but by no means new to Irish traditional music, brilliant Irish fiddler and guitarist Randal Bays and wonderful DADGAD guitarist Davey Mathias, together in concert. http://www.randalbays.com/presskit.htm

Randal has been playing Irish fiddle for more than thirty years and is widely recognized as a master of that complex, ancient art, in particular the traditional styles of Co. Clare and Co. Galway.

\"A commanding presence on the fiddle.\" – The Irish Times

“His playing has power and passion... simply a joy to listen to.” - Dirty Linen Magazine

\"Among the best Irish style fiddlers of his generation\" - Fiddler Magazine.

Randal has toured and recorded with many great Irish musicians including James Keane and Daithi Sproule (in the band FINGAL), James Kelly, Martin Hayes, Michéal O\'Domhnaill to name just a few. He has many great independent recordings including his live CD \"House to House\" (with Roger Landes) which was picked by the Irish Times as one of the \"top five traditional recordings of 2005\". He has performed all over the US, Europe and Canada and is in great demand as a teacher of Irish fiddle.

Randal is also a brilliant fingerstyle guitarist and has recorded two seminal albums with Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and contributed to the “Masters of the Irish Guitar” CD on Shanachie Records. He has recently released his first album of solo guitar work, “Oyster Light”.

Davey comes from a musical family in South Carolina, where he teaches guitar and banjo. He tours regularly with Randal and has appeared at many festivals and concerts around the Southeast with the group Corner House. Davey plays in DADGAD tuning and is an excellent teacher whose classes focus on key elements of Irish accompaniment including rhythm, right-hand technique, chord choices etc.

Following the concert, Randal and Davey will be joined on stage by some of our best local musicians, including the Gavins – Mick, Sean, Michael & Colleen, Jim O\'Callaghan, Frank Edgley and Bob Midden, to play for a Céili - waltzes, ceili dances and sets. Don’t miss this tremendous opportunity to listen and dance to this wonderful traditional Irish music!

Irish Rovers Celebrating 45th Anniversary
The Irish Rovers Celebrating 45th Anniversary on Detroit Public TV June 7 at 8 PM

For over four decades, The Irish Rovers have showcased the best that Ireland has to offer with their rollicking and rousing international performances of Irish music. In celebration of their 45th anniversary, The Irish Rovers are bringing the best of Ireland to Detroit. The Irish Rovers: Home in Ireland airs on Detroit Public Television Tuesday, June 7th at 8:00 PM with founding member, George Millar live in-studio.

The song list for the program includes fan favorites like “The Unicorn” written by Shel Silverstein, and the Rovers’ best known party anthem, “Wasn’t That a Party,” written by Tom Paxton. The playlist also includes: “Boys of Belfast”, “Ireland Boys Hurrah”, “The Dear Little Shamrock”, “Shore”, “The Boys of Killybegs”, “Irish Rover”, “The Dublin Pub Crawl”, “The Black Velvet Band”, “Gracehill Fair”, “Dunlace Castle”, “The Girls of Derry”, “The Dark Island/Mason’s Apron”, “Tully Dickey”, and “I’ll Return”.

“Our job is to entertain,” says original band member George Millar, who wrote many of the band’s original compositions. The Irish Rovers longevity as a band and ability to captivate audiences can be attributed to their freedom to produce their own music

Founding members George Millar and Jim Ferguson first met as emigrants from Northern Ireland at an Irish function in Toronto. The two hit it off as they “sang together ‘til dawn.” One year later, Joe Millar (George’s cousin) joined- completing the trio. Will Millar (George’s brother), was the last original member added to the group: “Will was presenting a children’s TV show called Just 4 Fun,\" George Millar recalls. “We went on the show and sang, “Whiskey You’re the Devil.” There were these little five-year-olds sitting on the floor in front of us. Of course the switchboards lit up with people going ‘Please don’t be putting those songs in our children’s ears.’ That’s how we began.”

The Rovers hosted a Canadian national television series: CBC’s The Irish Rovers Show, the most popular variety show of its time. They’re now making their way back to television to celebrate forty-five years of good-humored music and fun with The Irish Rovers: Home in Ireland.

WTVS Detroit Public Television is the viewer-supported PBS member station serving the nation\'s 11th largest television market, with 1.5 million weekly viewers in Southeast Michigan and 2.1 million weekly viewers across Canada. It operates on digital channel 43 (virtual subchannels 56.1, 56.2,and 56.3), and is carried on cable and satellite systems throughout Southeast Michigan and over a thousand communities in Canada.
